Communities in Our Society

There are many ways one could define the word community. It could be a group of people all living in the same area, a group of people who share an idea or belief, or a group of people who all work in the same place or play the same game. A community can also comprise of multiple groups of people who share any of the things mentioned above or anything else. In the simplest terms, a community is a group of people who are all interconnected in some way regardless of distance, social class, or other things of that nature. To me, a community is a group of people who can all relate to each other or share similar goals over one topic.

I could go the easy way and talk about the people who I see and work with in my community in terms of population, but I would rather not. As we may have guessed from the topic of my case study and my last blog post, I am all for animal rights and the preservation of the Earth. I consider myself to be a part of both communities. There are many, many people who contribute to the existence of my community. There are college age students, civilians, politicians, everyone and anyone. A very significant part of the animal rights and climate communities are PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).

There are many ways that I have become involved with my communities. It is not a necessity that you get involved with large organized events, though that, of course, is a great way to do it. I have taken part in certain events like that. However, I have also done simple things on my own like donate to animal charities, make blankets for shelter animals, picked up trash off of beaches, and even signing petitions. There are plenty of other ways for people to become involved as well. It may not seem like much, but even just giving up some of your time to look into these issues (or issues of your own choice) is a part of contributing. All great things start with a though.

Communities are very important, especially during these times. With all of the panic and isolation caused by the pandemic, we are relying more heavily on our communities to keep us updated on, not only our own goals, but on the world itself. We also have the ability to reach out to our communities to help relieve our own mental states. With all that has been happening with the election, the violence, the protests, the isolation, and the fear of the pandemic, the people’s mentalities can and have become jumpy and rather unstable. As humans, we need to communicate with others, and who better to talk to than those in our communities? We can do this through communication features on social media platforms. There is a lot we can accomplish through our communities, and I think they play a very significant role in our society.
